  I read and understood the question same as you, Dan. It makes an example for 
how easily two people can interpret a written statement very differently. I 
try very hard to 
take such things as innocently as they look. Matthew prefaced the remark by 
stating he had always wondered about the subject, and wanted to learn. I 
know there's much we Americans take for granted about what people in other 
countries know about our history and think of it. As much as I tried over 
the years to learn about Great Britain and its history after visiting there 
as a teenager, I learned so much more from a British friend and coworker who 
had moved to the US a few years ago. 
 
You'll never know if you don't ask.

Americans give thanks for anyway?!" which would have been cynical, but more 
in line of a general inquirey, like "What do Clarinettists change reeds 
for?"... actually ... that could be taken both ways  too.
