Matthew, I haven't read what the web pages that others have cited, and
so this may be repetitious, but the American Thanksgiving holiday
focuses on a large family-oriented meal with all the fixings.
Gift-giving is not (usually) part of the holiday. Depending on your
religious beliefs, many people attend a church service, but Thanksgiving
is not as strongly religious as Christmas is.

In my case, one of my daughters invited me to their house, and my
grand-daughter's in-laws were invited also. After eating turkey with
stuffing and vegetables and olives and cranberry sauce and pies and wine
and so forth, we sat in their living room for about 3 hours and chatted
about various things.... including the best way to polish the interior
of a freshly bored barrel.

The traditional meal is turkey, but some families choose ham or roast
beef. In most supermarkets, as part of the celebration, you can buy a
full turkey for $5. Occasionally you get a turkey for free. The
markets hope, of course, that you'll buy all the fixings that you need
along with the turkey.
