Years ago, one lister described the process they go through when a reed
has proven itself unworthy. They open up their clarinet case so that
all the other reeds can see clearly, then smash the offending reed into
the stand. The purpose, of course, is to teach the other reeds a lesson
about what happens when reeds misbehave. I suspect a stern lecture is
probably appropriate, as well.

I cannot vouch for the efficacy in any measurable way, but I can say
from personal experience that this procedure is extremely satisfying.
