I agree with this approach. I use it myself - with one difference: after
the first soak in water, the rest are done with saliva. I don't know that
it helps; but it seems to make the reeds last longer for me. The whole
curing process takes several days before I touch the wood with a knife or
sand paper. You don't say it; but I assume that you also actually try to
play the reed before the first cut.
