Kalmen Opperman began studying reed-making and mouthpiece-making in 1931, when he was an 11-year-old
boy. His teacher was Edward Hoffmann, a German craftsman who designed and made the Penzel-Mueller
#3 mouthpiece. Mr. Hoffmann was 89 years of age at the time.

M. Baron Company has recently published the revised edition of Kalmen Opperman's 'Handbook for
Making and Adjusting Single Reeds.' The original edition had been out of print for quite a few
years.
