LOL--thanx for the kind words and for changing the subject header, which I
should've done (point taken...). As it happens, you're both right. The
spelling was intentional, but it also seems to have been a mistake. (Oh,
well, I'd already proved I'm a nerd by admitting to owning an alto
clarinet, so....) I thought I was lifting a clever coinage from a 1980
"Dr. Who" episode, "Meglos." Now, though, I'm not so sure. It may be
that I'm hearing the word wrong on the soundtrack. (I'm American; they're
speaking English; I taped the episode off late-night PBS and it's a rather
poor-quality copy. Excuses, excuses....) I don't have the "novelization"
(speaking of coinages, I hate that one...) by Terence Dicks, but I looked
up the episode in Jean-Marc Lofficier's "Programme Guide" (London: Virgin,
1994 ppb, p. 167-168). That's the corrected edition with the errata list
at the back. Lofficier, who acknowledges Dicks as a source, uses the
proper dictionary word, hysteresis.

Reality is just a crutch for those who can't handle science fiction.
