Excerpted from:

Mitchell, Jon C. The Band Works of Gustav Holst. Unknown: Vergeit bei Hans
Schneider, 1990.

Holst served [in WWI] from November, 1918 until the following June.
Salonica was his first stop; later, during the spring, he was sent to
Constantinople. Often the facilities were lacking, but the attitudes were
generally receptive towards music. His bands and orchestras often consisted
of whatever personnel and instrumentation happened to be available at the
moment. Holst provided the following description of his 3:00 p.m. orchestra
class at Salonica:

"Three violins, one viola, two flat pitch flutes, one oboe (has not touched
an instrument since 1914), one sharp pitch clarinet, one double bass (who
has learned a fortnight, but means business and is a real musician) and a
piano approximately half a tone below the flat pitch flute."

End excerpt.

Certainly adds perspective to my life.
