I believe that what Yamaha did (which is very confusing and for no apparent
reason) is this:
To get the comparable flute from "old" #'s to "new" #'s, take the new # and
subtract 103. Thus, the new 684 (which I own) is comparable to the former
581 (the low end of the professional line), although there are a few slight
differences having to do with screws, tone holes, etc...
Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong...
