Whether it's locked or not, if an instrument is stolen on school property,
it had better be on the owner's homeowner's or renter's insurance. Because
the school's insurance does not cover it.

I had a student whose horn was stolen Out Of Her Case. The thief left the
case there empty. And the school said their insurance does not cover other
people's personal property that is left there.

Not all band rooms are locked 24/7. It's Not safe to leave a horn anywhere.
I know kids who leave their horns in the band director's office. And many a
time I've walked into that office which was left wide open while the
director went to the office, or the bathroom - or even if he was just 10
feet away in the band room. (You cannot see one from the other.) I could
have walked out with a couple of Buffets and a couple of silver flutes and
so could anyone else who was on the property.

Kids don't have cash. And they Will steal and sell the stuff. The economy
sucks. People don't have a lot of money. A horn left lying unsecured is
just bait. Anyone who leaves an instrument not under lock and key in a car
or a public place is just asking for it.
