Tom, all,

I am certainly in no position to go against the advice of your
teacher, but I do think it is interesting to consider how much time
you would have to devote to flute study for these benefits.
And what would be the result if, instead, you put this extra time
into clarinet study - perhaps with specific focus on breathing an
breath control?
Of course this would not be so much fun as playing the flute, and
would not offer the extra playing opportunities that you get from the
flute, but it would be rather cheaper, and would improve your
clarinet embouchure too.
