Dear Tom,

To add to all the useful information people have
already posted, I found some of the posts on the
woodwind doubling forum at www.forum.saxontheweb.net
to be quite helpful when I started learning the flute.
I think somewhere on that site there's also an article
by Gordon Palmer, which contatains an edited email
correspondence between him and someone learning flute
- this is also interesting reading.
I'd second the recommendation for Yamaha flutes - I've
been learning flute as a double for about 6 months
now, and I feel like I could go a lot further on even
my basic Yamaha student model before it (rather than
me) was the limiting factor...

Regards
Mark Cookson

PS Definitely try to get at least a few lessons with a
good teacher - I've been mostly self-taught, but I
think the odd lesson can steer you in the right
direction and avoid a lot of wasted time.
