Hi Tom,

It is very early in the morning and there is nobody here at work, so I am
taking time that I don't usually have anymore to respond to your request=2E=
=20
I have played several different brands of flutes during the time I spent
doubling on the instrument=2E As for student models, I have owned Bundy,
Gemienhardt, Buffet, Armstrong and Yamaha=2E The only one I really liked =
was
the Yamaha (model 225S II)=2E When I moved up to an intermediate model, I=

sold all the beginner flutes except the Yamaha=2E As for intermediate
flutes, I owned Gemienhardt and Artley (Wilkins model) flutes=2E I had a
very difficult time with the Gemienhardt and did most of my playing on the=

Artley=2E Four years ago I bought my first professional level flute, a Pe=
arl
785=2E It is a wonderful flute and I play it exclusively, with an excepti=
on
which I will get to momentarily=2E BUT=2E=2E=2E=2E=2E I still have that Y=
amaha=2E It
has become my back-up and for a couple of reasons=2E Number 1 is that it =
is
extremely easy to play=2E I have no trouble playing any other instrument =
and
switching to the Yamaha=2E Number two is that the scale is even from end =
to
end=2E There isn't a note on it that is out of tune ever=2E Number three=
is
that it is durable=2E I take it with me, along with the Pearl, whenever I=

play "just in case"=2E If I am doubling on a lot of differnet instruments=
,
usually when I play in the pit, I use the Yamaha=2E It is so reliable and=

the switch is so easy that it has become my preferred instrument in the
pit, if I am playing more than two instruments=2E

In the end, choosing a flute is a very personal thing=2E What works for o=
ne
player, definitely may not work for the next=2E But I have yet to find a
student model flute with a head joint that is more accommodating than
Yamaha's=2E The head joint is everything in a flute=2E The tube is much l=
ess
important=2E There are many people who spend their money on a good headjo=
int
and put it on a lesser quality flute body=2E There are many many good flu=
te
makers out there=2E The key to finding what works for you is to play as m=
any
flutes as possible=2E if you can let me know where you live, I may be abl=
e
to direct you to a place near-by that stacks flutes=2E Otherwise you can
always deal with one of the mail order houses such as Flute World or
Cincinnati Flute Works as a starting point=2E There many more good flute
mail order sites available too=2E If you are interested, write privately =
or
call me a 410-255-3227 after 5 PM and I'll fill you in=2E best of luck=2E=

Patty Smith mentioned the Flutenet list=2E You could sign on to that list=

and ask your questions there=2E It is probably the most friendly list on =
the
net=2E You can discuss anything except politics and religion without flam=
es
and there are some very fine professionals on list all the time=2E You ca=
