Ormondtoby, you have made wise observations about the purpose of
education in general, as well as the unique social teaching opportunitys
a musical performing ensemble for students presents. One thing that all
of us must keep in mind, whatever our views on this situation:

In U.S. culture, for the greatest part, our music education programs are
not primarily performance oriented in their ultimate purposes, though
you'd hardly believe that if you observed what goes on in a lot of them!
(no, I will NOT start a debate on marching band or anything else. I'm
going to be too busy catching the next hyperspace shuttle to the
Andromeda galaxy)
Learning the skills of working with others in a coordinated, disciplined
fashion to achieve common goals, learning how to find one's best place
in the situation...all these things are necessary learnings that can be
learned in the school band program. Thanks for reminding me of this
with another well-written post.

Patricia Smith
