Many of us own more than one clarinet. I happen to own a Yamaha
YCL-20, which I think is what your daughter plays, and a Howarth. The
tenons and sockets on my two instruments don't fit each other. Thus I
can't assemble a complete instrument from them, and I can't test the
sound myself. I honestly don't know how bad the sound may if the two
joints from two different instruments at least fit together.

One reason why I mentioned this detail is the possibility that the same
thing happened to the girl who took your daughter's clarinet.

That is, perhaps the girl tried to put your daughter's joint on her
clarinet; and only when it didn't fit, she decided to bring it back.

This would be an example of the need to find out what really happened
(as part of the education process). Are you dealing with a student who
realized that she had done the wrong thing and was trying to undo her
mistake? In which case, was her outward nonchalance really a matter of
fear? Or are you dealing with a student who would've kept the joint if
it had fitted?
