School is a place for learning, and certainly learning social values is
part of it.

I think that the band director and the parents must use this incident to
educate the children (both victim and perpetrator) about "property" and
how to handle a violation thereof without violence and how to make
accurate judgements about the other person's motives (which includes
finding out what was going on).

As always, context makes a huge difference. Certainly if an adult
walked away with part of my clarinet without asking or without calling
my attention to the fact, I would not react the same way as I would if a
child did the same thing. And in both cases, it would make a
difference how much (if anything) I knew about the other person.

It seems to me that education of some sort is absolutely necessary in
this case. Education does *not* always require punishment or
condemnation. It's important not to overlook this. But certainly
conversation with both children is absolutely required here. The
quoted remark about "God will take care of this" also offends me.
That's not what religion should say about this incident.

"Private property" is too fundamental a social value to be ignored in
any environment, but certainly it cannot be ignored during school
activities in a country that recognizes property rights.

I suppose that I should've added "IMO" to the preceding, but I don't see
any way that both children should not receive counselling and
explanation (and reassurance that the matter is closed) of some sort.
