You might, but would you be disrespectful (I would submit being nonchalant
is disrespectful) to an upset parent? I would hope you be respectful even
if the parent *didn't* have a right to be upset.

The context is clear. The band director acted nonchalantly, as if the
parent's concern wasn't important. Or maybe we have a different definition
of "nonchalant". Perhaps you want to escalate your semantic argument
regarding the word "theft" and add the word "nonchalant"? I find such
arguments rather tiresome, myself.
