Kathy,
My opinion is that a small engraved mark, maybe a repeat of the SN, is not a
harmful thing. With a bunch of kids with similar instruments it seems like a
good idea.

However, more importantly, another person's instrument should not be touched
under any circumstances, without permission. That's just the way it is in the
musical world. These are kids and some of them don't know better; they
should be taught. Ask the director, diplomatically if you choose, what he has done
to tell the girl she was completely out of line.

I don't see worrying about things if there is no real problem. I wonder if
theft of musical instruments is a problem to worry about in your high school?
A panicky boy called our music store to say his sax got stolen at school. The
next day I called to get more info; it turns out the sax had been found in
another room. No theft; someone just spaced out and put it in the wrong place.
You might want to get the real story of the missing instruments from the
director; find out that way if there is a problem for your daughter beyond normal
caring for her instrument.
