On any given day, I work with clarinetists of all ages improving intonation.
There is no question that using the pure third is a challenge on many notes.
Is there a consensus on the usage of pure intervals in performance?
I really do have to brag on some of the teachers/performers I've been
working with. I had the pleasure of hearing Richard MacDowell (UT Austin)
recently with the Wind Quintet. Not only fantastic intonation (pure
intervals), but a vast array of colors. I could not recommend a better
teacher if any are looking for a great school and great teacher!
Strangely enough, I just finished playing a ballet with one a fantastic
young principal clarinet of a regional orchestra that struggled with every
third he played. So what does the "clarinet world" teach?!
