Hi Walter,

Since frequency doubles with each octave, there is a logarithmic
relationship between frequency and pitch. The number of cents
of pitch difference between two frequencies f1 and f2 is

cents =3D 1200 log-base-2(f2/f1)

(100 cents is one semitone.) For f1=3D439Hz and f2=3D440Hz, this gives
you close to 4 cents. And yes, 442 is about 8 cents sharp to 440,
but as you go higher, a constant difference in frequency becomes
less of a difference in pitch.

Cheers,
