I want to simplify my question by adding a restriction that we aren't
discussing: (1) one member is playing so softly that it's difficult to
hear his/her pitch precisely, and (2) fast trills where a fingering
difficulty may force a note to be flat or sharp.

I'm not saying that such situations are unimportant. I'm only
eliminating them from my question in order not to overcomplicate your
reply.
