Actually----there was a time when a HUGE pecentage of arrangements of band music called for soprano, alto, tenor and baritone sax. The Hastings Band Library (Now Heisig-Hastings Band) from the Santa Cruz Boardwalk has hundreds of arrangements that call for SATB saxes.

The reason is the same as the reason they don't want kids to play only
soprano sax in concert band -- there are very few PARTS written for
them. Clarinet is currently "out" as a jazz instrument. If the band is
REALLY hurting for personnel and needs to cover parts, a clarinet can be
used in place of a trumpet or tenor sax, but the balances will be less than
ideal.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
