Some people's "history" was "current events" for some of us. I'm not old
enough to have been alive 70 years ago, but 1935 doesn't somehow sound as
extremely long ago to me as it seems to you. :-)

I do have to stifle a snicker, though, when I hear people refer to Sacre du
printemps or Wozzeck (both slightly less recent even than the change to
A=440, apparently) as "modern music." I guess "old," "recent," "new" and
"modern" are almost as tricky as "bright" and "dark."
