The reason is the same as the reason they don't want kids to play only
soprano sax in concert band -- there are very few PARTS written for
them. Clarinet is currently "out" as a jazz instrument. If the band is
REALLY hurting for personnel and needs to cover parts, a clarinet can be
used in place of a trumpet or tenor sax, but the balances will be less than
ideal.
