Ginny Scarfino says:

>I played in a community band for a while, and when the music said
=66ortissimo, the players often took that to mean play as loud as they
possibly could. The conductor would then gently remind them to "never
play louder than lovely", and that has stuck with me ever since.<

That was the motto of the wonderful English soprano Isobel Baillie. Her
autobiography was called "Never Sing Louder Than Lovely." See
<http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Bio/Baillie-Isobel.htm>.

My old band director (a veteran of military bands) had an equally good
rule: "When you play pianissimo, you shouldn't be able to hear yourself.
When you play fortissimo, you should be able to hear everyone else."

Best regards.

Ken Shaw
