Hey, at least it wasn't Emma Johnson!! There aren't that many soloists
to choose from though. There are many players and players in the
Orchestras but not very many touring soloists like the violinists,
pianists and vocalists - that would be why.

Michael Collins has had a lot of exposure on BBC radio. Yes he is
indeed a
fine player, but there are a lot of fine players in this country (UK)
in
addition to other countries. I wrote to the BBC 3 or 4 years ago
trying to
explain that we do not wish to hear the *same* players continuously.
They
surely have a responsibility to give others the deserving opportunity
of, if
not the same air time, then some time. They, do, but there was a bias
towards M.C. at that time, and it is probably still unbalanced
somewhat. We
hear an enormous amount of different violinists, pianists and
vocalists, but
it seems that other orchestral sections do not the same amount of
diverse
selection. With a more cosmopolitan selection of players, we not only
get to
hear a bigger selection of standard repertoire and new music, but we
hear
about the musicians themselves also, and their lives and studies etc.
I`m bored with M.C.`s life and history, if not quite so much his
playing, so
I explained this in my letter, and that we must have at least 250 -
350
professional players over here of first rate ability. We have
probably
heard between 5 and 10 different players in the last 12 months, and
we`ll no
doubt hear the same players again next year. An allocated amount of
scheduled air time for clarinettists` is no excuse.
I did not recieve a reply.
