Most British (and probably American) orchestras have in general, at any rate
by default, been committed to sostenuto, and holding each note to its full
length. Whereas this 'other' style -- which shouldn't really be called
'other', since it has a much longer pedigree -- 'sees' an isolated written
note as indicating an entity that diminishes, more or less.

I call this the "I am so committed and enthralled with my beautiful tone
quality that I'm going to hold this note full value, full volume, and by the
way, at MY PITCH, no matter what else is going on in the music" syndrome.

Much beloved by many wind players in otherwise professional groups.
