Rafael Kubelik said something wonderful during a rehearsal with the Boston
Conservatory Orchestra which I was playing in...during a long section in the
Finale of the Bartok Concerto for Orchestra he stopped the orchestra in one
of the tutti's in the Devopment section...

pointing in the direction of the Brass he stopped for a moment and made a
gutteral
noise and said..."Forte is always with good sound...at this moment we are
not
making good sound." Then he stood for a few seconds and said..."either the
rest
of the orchestra plays louder or the Brass play Mf....but always with
control."

Then miraculously the sound was better....but in this case it was simply
common sense.
