---Original message ---

Please don't attribute to me your incorrect
understanding and misinterpretation of my detailed
words about the first edition of 622. You will find
not a single suggestion that allows anyone to conclude
that I reject the 1803 edition, though your
poorly-chosen remarks give the impression that I said
or implied that. I did not.

Dear Dan,

I do apologise if I have been guilty of putting words
in your mouth. However I must ask you not to do the
same thing to me :-)

You seem to think that I am holding up the 1803
edition as some sort of holy grail, when I am doing
nothing of the sort. If you re-read my original post,
you will see that I am looking for a copy of this
edition with the purpose of making an **unaltered***,
neatly typeset version readily available via a website
which lets people download music in the public domain.

I fully agree with your analysis of the problems
inherent in this edition, but the fact remains that it
is our only source for much of what Mozart wrote. You
write "And you seem to think that some useful purpose
is served by taking this edition and doing things to
it to produce a better one." Is this not precisely
what every subsequent edition of K.622 has had to do
(for better or for worse)?

In my first post I stated that I thought this would be
the most "historically interesting" of public domain
editions to make easily accessible, and I would stand
by this statement. The 1803 edition is not terribly
easy to find at the moment - I certainly haven't been
deluged with offers of a copy... (and if you yourself
do have one, any chance of emailing me a scanned
copy?)
Just to make things clear, the only claim to
authenticity I would hope to make is that I could
produce an authentic copy of the 1803 edition. I think
that for all its flaws, this edition played a vital
role in the transmission of the work, and that making
it more readily available would be a good thing. Would
you disagree?

Regards

Mark
