Hi David!
I am sorry to answer your Email, but I respectly disagree with you.
I think there are diferent landscapes for a job clarinetist and a teacher. I
know, and probably you too, several great clarinet players that do not know
how to teach, and vice-versa.
Doctorate degree will never play well for the possible cadidate, and I think
the University would requires balance betwen cientific and empirical
(musical) qualities of the candidate.
I do not think that any clarinet player have to "lost" time to get the DMA,
but those that want to teach should think seriously about that. I can see
that today is increasing the number of good clarinet players geting DMA. We
would think about that.
