I am only 5'4", and one thing I've never been accused of is not being able
to get a big sound. Physical size matters very little.

If their equipment is in good shape, and their mouthpieces and reeds are
appropriate for them, then the biggest issue is probably good breath
support. Not only do they need to breathe properly (something teenage girls
aren't always good at), but they need to USE that air to support their
playing. Does no good to get a nice, deep breath if they don't use it to
push through the horn!

Nicholas - there will be big students with small sounds and small
students with big sounds.
I've had little girls who had huge sounds and big guys who I had to
work hard to keep them from closing down their setup or to keep their
wind from being constricted. Experiment with mouthpiece/reed amount in
the mouth, tongue position, constriction of the throat, double lip
embouchure to make sure that they aren't biting, getting a tone on
just the mouthpiece, then adding the barrel and checking the pitch,
and having a decibel meter can come in handy to measure actually what
they are doing sound volume wise and to measure progress.

As all is true below, the 2 students are so convinced that because of
their
size, that they cannot produce a forte sound through their horns.
