I just wanted to thank everyone who replied to my query about my new R-13. Thanks for the 'alternate' alternate fingerings for the stuffy Bb. I now have several great ones to use and I have worked out all the passages I have to play with great results. I looked in the register tube and sadly, no crud in there, so that's not the problem. I will look into the Galper modification, and I definitely noticed that extra breath pressure improves the note considerably. Thank you for all the encouragement, information and help.

As it turned out, my husband went and grabbed that R-13 for me for my birthday and presented it to me this past Saturday at my birthday party. You can imagine my surprise and emotion at receiving it - no more worrying about how to get something when it is in your hands.

Two more questions for the list, then I'm off to do it justice (by practicing a lot):

1. This instrument came with 2 barrels. Pushed all the way in, the longer one plays perfectly in tune at A=440 and the shorter one seems to play perfectly in tune at about A=444. Is this shorter barrel for correct playing of period music? I'm all rock-n-roll now, but it would be nice to know for what else I have the proper equipment.

2. The serial number on this clarinet is 48544, so by my reading of the s.n. charts. this dates the instrument to about 1953. (Can this be right?) The instrument is in incredible condition, no wear on the keys, not a blemish anywhere except for the alleged-but-invisible professionally-repaired crack. Any input on this is appreciated. I imagine this instrument might have been a backup for a pro player (a backup that didn't get played much and recently got replaced). If that player (from the Portland, Oregon area) is reading this list. - thank you so much for parting with this clarinet - I couldn't possibly be happier.

Thanks again to everyone that gave me input - come to Portland and I'll buy you a beer (or whatever). And if you are the former owner of this instrument definitely email me so I can thank you in person!

Best,
Michele Kaeder, Clarinet + Bari & Alto Saxes
