Hi Roger (and others),
What do you make of the discussion of "basset" in Newhill's book, "The
basset-horn and its music", where he notes that "basset" was used as a
name for a string instrument related to the cello, and may have
influenced the naming of the basset-horn because of similar tone
colours? (I don't remember the precise details of the argument, and I'm
afraid I don't have the book to hand.)
