I'm going to make a general request that people try to be more clear in
their reference to range. The above quoted statement changes drastically
depending on to which C Josh is referring.
If I assume C just above the staff (C'' or C2 some might call it) I would
say he is being too conservative.
If I assume one octave above that C (C''' or C3 some might call it) I would
say he is being a bit too demanding.
But I deal with students all the time who have been playing for a lot
longer than 4 years and don't know you can buy different brands/strengths
of reeds or a different brand of mouthpiece, so I rarely think of
development in terms of years. I wouldn't even try to tell a student how
high they should be able to play based solely on their years of playing
experience.
