Does she have this preference because she has been TOLD that is what to
get, or because she has tried several comparable models and made her choice
based on the evidence? The R-13 is a nice instrument, but so are many others!

And you are absolutely right about not wanting it used for marching
band! Keep the old horn and use it as the marching band beater.

If she wants to play in jazz band, she should learn to double on sax, but I
would recommend alto, given her preference for higher notes. Sopranos are
nice toys, but little used in real life (I've had mine since 1992 and have
played it in public on maybe 3 or 4 occasions). Altos and tenors play the
same way and are much more useful in the long run. When my high school
started a jazz band in the second semester of my senior year, I played
tenor parts on clarinet since we HAD no tenor, but you can't count on
that! I had only been playing clarinet for a few months and was not quite
ready to start another instrument! Many of the older arrangements assume
that the saxes can double clarinet, so she is all set there!

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
