Nicholas,

Where do you teach?

I see drop out rates of as high as 80%. In one of those schools they hired =
one of my college students. She changed that to a 92% retention rate in her=
first year! She was a college freshman!

I would be glad to share details of how we get kids REALLY excited about mu=
sic with anyone.

The first thing that we did was to STRONGLY urge ALL parents to get the kid=
s good equipment---"MUSIC IS ITS OWN REWARD"! There is little if any reward=
on average or poor equipment.
There is HUGE reward with equipment that works VERY well!

The first thing that we tell all of the kids is a good mouthpiece.

Brasses---CG Personal for trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn. Trombone ---Schil=
ke 52, Euphonium 52D in Gold, French Horn Schilke 32 or better 32 in Gold, =
Bass Trombone Schilke 60, and Tuba Conn Helleberg.

Wdwds---clarinet Morgan Protone, same for saxes. Of course, my classical mo=
uthpieces for as many of the kids as will buy them.

Reeds, generally Vandoren regular cuts. We also have some super exciting Bu=
ffet # 2 1/2, and 3 in stock---GREAT STUFF!!!

Instruments---Flute Jupiter 511N (they now seem to have bought the silver-p=
late MYTH!), clarinets---Buffet B12 (not B10!!!!) with the ring key pads ch=
anged out ---smaller, thinner, harder pads. Saxes ---Jupiter ---which I do =
up to $300 labor to to improve them! Trumpets ---Jupiter. Trombones ---Bess=
on, though they seem to no longer be interested in selling the good models =
they used to make. So it appears there is not a good student trombone curre=
ntly made. Euphonium---B&S. French Horn---CONN 8D!!! (only good choice).

The band method we use is the "EASY STEPS TO THE BAND" by Maurice Taylor. T=
his method produces MUCH better results than anything else we have seen. (a=
nd I have been teaching 41 years !!!!!).

We have a number of specific things that we do for each instrument---brasse=
s 2/3's on the top lip!!! (see St Jacome ORIGINAL---100 years old---method =
, or the new Claude Gordon edition which RESTORES St Jacomes teaching. or =
Clarke's teaching or Claude Gordon's works.)

There is a new comprehensive band method coming out soon ---written by myse=
lf. It is being tested by my co-author, Andy Love in east San Jose, Califor=
nia this year.

call me at (831) 425-5658 for any enquiries about this new method, or for a=
dvice---always glad to give it!

I DO strongly URGE the use of the "Easy Steps to the Band", it is a great m=
ethod!!!

20% improved to 92%---check us out!

Kurt

Subject: [kl] confidence in the band program

I just joined a new job this semester and am finding out that the students=
=20
in the program lack confidence that they can sound good when they practice=
=20
and play. I love this job and am enthusiastic to be there, and I think it i=
s=20
starting to grow on them. Does anyone out there find this happening to thei=
r=20
students in the band program?
