Dear friends,

Just an announcement about a performance of my Quintet for Clarinet and
Strings based on Beatles songs (22 in all).

I will be performing it with the St. Helens String Quartet at the Illsley
Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall this Friday, October 29 at 8PM.
More information is at
http://www.seattlesymphony.org/benaroya/browse/dateview.asp?dt=10%2F29%2F2004

In the quintet, I used Beatles Songs as the basis for composition as any
composer uses themes for large-scale works. This is more than an
arrangmenet. The first movement is a combination of "Eleanor Rigby" and
"For No One" and after each is stated, there follows a developement - in
this case a fugue - in which the motives are sliced and diced, and twisted
and turned, culminating in a return that adds power to already powerful
material. The second movement is a juxtaposing of Julia, Mother Nature's
Son, and I Will. The third uses Only a Northern Song as a vessel into
which I pour I am the Walrus, He Said/She Said, Strawberry Fields and
others. The coda is a rumination on Blue Jay Way. The last movement is a
delightful series beginning with Got to get you into my Life, and ending
with, of course, "The End."

I'm hoping to get permission to publish the work, so that any of you who
are interested can perform it also.

Cheers,

Sean Osborn, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, retired.
