I agree with both statements. I played clarinet for my first two years
of high school marching band and felt useless and unheard. Then I
switched to sousaphone (which I had taken up in eighth grade because
it looked like fun) and had a much better time during my last two years,
while continuing to play clarinet in the concert band.

Connecting to the thread on girls and boys choosing various instruments,
in my senior year of high school my marching band had an all-female
sousaphone section. (Of course, statistics can be misleading; there
were exactly two of us.)
