That age thing someone mentioned seems to apply to both sexes around
here. There are not many few amateur clarinetists in Las Vegas who are
between about 25-40.

I had a similar experience when I entered my first orchestra: I was a
student at that time, and a joined a wind band. There were some 10 people
aged less than 25, and some thirty people over 50, and me (almost 30) in
between.

And many years after, when I joined the Maartensdijk band, there was an even
stronger imbalance as to age: 20 members were under 20, 23 were over 50,
three were in between!

This imbalance still exist, but not as flagrant anymore:many of the youths
quit for diverse reasons like moving to another play, internal quarrels,
etc, whereas the older ones left for different reasons, but the imbalance
still exists.
