My experience, starting around 1957 at age nine was that 2/3 of the
clarinet players in bands and orchestras I played in were male. This
continued with my reentry into playing about 8 years ago. However, in the
last two years or so it has been more like 50/50.

That age thing someone mentioned seems to apply to both sexes around
here. There are not many few amateur clarinetists in Las Vegas who are
between about 25-40.

When my son was in 8th grade, he was the only boy (first chair). The next
year at the performing arts magnet high school he went to it was about
50/50 (he graduated in 2002).
