I was the only guy clarinetist in elementary, junior high, high school. in
college, there was one other male clarinetist...a fraternity brother who
played (very well) and owned his own alto clarinet. He also talked backwards
in his sleep...he was always fair game for jokes about his choice of
instruments, but was and thirty years later still is an incredible alto and
bass clarinetist.

But I remember that in all-county the entire front row was always guys,
likewise in all-area and all-state bands, and usually at least half the
sections were comprised of guys.

Since then, every professional or community wind band I have been in has had
clarinet sections that were 50/50. Same with flutes, but saxophones have
usually been predominantly ladies. And my high school band had
predominantly female trombone and euphonium players.
