From my Junior High and High school days I remember 2 male clarinets one
graduated a long time before I went into high school and the other quit (school)
in Junior High. The Junior High band instructor was and is a clarinet player
and so was the one before him who happened to be his older brother. my
graduating class was very small (little over 100 people) there were 3 female clarinets,
2 female trombones, 1 male trumpet, 1 female French horn, one male
uphonium/trumbone player, and one percussion in my Senior band class. The years I was in
band there were no male clarinets that lasted (by the way I do believe the
one who did that was older then me went on to music) but there were teachers and
student teachers who were...I remember one student teacher who helped me a
lot his name was Mr. Sylvester (sp?) he was a great teacher and I believe we
were told he is in his home country now teaching and playing maybe (he was
foreign) I plan on encouraging my son to play the clarinet. I also know that the
boys who thought about playing them in our school for the past since I was there
and maybe before were made fun of and called girlie...but by no means is it
girlie in my opinion...I don't know much about who started out with the other
sections but with my clarinet section when we were in JH we were HUGE...there
were 8 of us at least (and only one boy, who drooped out)...but because of all
the drop outs I guess that is why they combine the bands in High School...my
senior year we had 7 in the symphonic band I think and, all girls. also...no
male flutes at all, but I did meet a kid form a school near by who said he played
the flute.
