Subject: clarinet gender ratio

I'm a freshman in college studying clarinet with Bill Kirkley, who is quite
well-recognized in the Boston area. My school is actually a small liberal
arts college (1700 students) with an NASM-accredited music program. We have
about 100 music majors, and that is, correct me if I'm wrong, quite a good
ratio for a liberal arts school (one music major in every seventeen
students). There are only two clarinet majors this year, and both of us are
male freshmen. However, we are also the only male clarinets in any of the
ensembles here (that makes two out of ten clarinets in Symphonic Band and
two out of six clarinets in Wind Ensemble male...in our orchestra, we make
one hundred percent of the clarinetists male ;-)) In high school, I was the
only male clarinetist. The school had about 1150 students and a band
program of about one hundred students.

Just thought I'd put in my two cents.
