Subj: [kl] Black History Month Recital
Date: Thu, 21 Oct 2004 12:15:29 -0400

Good morning Clarinet list:

I wanted to let you know that I have an exiciting graduate recital
project coming up in February presenting my "Culturally Sound"
Concert as part of my recital requirements for earning my MA at New
York University. My "Culturally Sound" arts-in-education program
received its first funding from the International Clarinet
Association and has become a great success in my community and I
continue to be grateful to them for their support.

The focus of my work is to expose to young people and the community
to the wealth of creativity out there of Black composers and how very
similar it is to the music many of them listen to today such as hip-
hop and R&B. My goal is expand their minds beyond Mozart and
Beethoven and learn a new appreciation for their instrument.

My program will be "For Clarinet" by Ed Bland, "Music for Clarinet
and Piano" by Malcolm Rector, "Sonata" by David Baker, "Three African
Portraits for Woodwind Quintet" by Lucius Weathersby and "Quintet for
Clarinet and Strings in F minor" by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.

There will be a post-performance reception featuring foods of the
Caribbean and words by the composers who have confirmed attendance.

This event is currently scheduled for Saturday February 26, 2005 at
7pm at New York University. Specific location and other details will
be posted on my website http://www.culturallysound.com at the end of
the month.

For those of you in the NYC area or plan to be in this area, it would
be great to have your support and possibly maybe take something from
it that you can present to your community music schools, students,
and colleagues. If anyone is interested in being on the mailing list
to receive more information about this event and others related
to "Culturally Sound" please let me know. Thanks.

Soulfully,

Stacy-Michelle Valentine
