Subj: [kl] Short clarinet story "Thats where the piano comes in"
Date: Tue, 19 Oct 2004 22:36:08 -0400

Hi. I just thought I'd share an amusing event that
happened yesterday.

Yesterday I was teaching clarinet lessons, and I
pulled out a small piece for one of my younger
students (9 years old). I was teaching what the
dynamic markings mean, as far as p means piano (soft),
f means forte (loud), etc and we began to play the
piece together. About halfway through, the student
suddenly stopped playing. I stopped as well and asked
why, and he pointed to the small p (piano) on the page
and said "Because that's where the piano comes in.". I
realized that he thought p(iano) meant that that is
where the piano should come in. I explained what the
real meaning was and he played through correctly. I
just thought it was an amusing story, and a flashback
to the days of my first attempts at clarinet. Yes,
we've all been there. Admit it... :)
