Throughout this extended discussion, I infer that "contact" is usually
referring to contact of the tip of the read against the tip of the
mouthpiece. We should probably not forget that the reed is always in
contact with the mouthpiece at the table and along part of the rails, and
even if it vibrates less than is necessary to cause contact at the tip, it
will be varying the length of contact along the rails at each side, and
thus changing (valving) the airflow. I can only presume that this will
have an effect on the coupled reed/clarinet resonant system, and be
affected by all of the things that change tone quality.
