I had mine out at age 21 when I was still a college student. I was out of
commission for clarinet for several weeks. Even after the tissue had healed
and I was doing everything else normally, I couldn't blow strongly enough
into the clarinet to make a sound - the air all went out my nose at the
slightest pressure. The doctor either hadn't expected it to take so long (he
did treat singers regularly, but not reed players) or just neglected to warn
me. So my advice is, if you must have the tonsils removed at all, to leave
yourself LOTS of time - based on my experience, 6 weeks or possibly even
longer.
