I have to respectfully disagree. Trumpets (well, until the relatively
recent advent of the Monette brand) are much less expensive. Trombones are
less expensive.

With advent of the Tosca line, Buffet is now listing clarinets with a list
price of $8,311.99. I use list price as on a comparison recognizing that
people rarely pay list prices. We've surpassed the saxophone world (a brand
new Selmer Ref 54 Alto, I believe the most expensive non-precious metal
alto saxophone on the market, has a list price of $6,300).

Admittedly, the flute world still has us easily beaten. $8,000, street
price, gets you a relatively high end silver flute. One can easily start
talking about $15,000-$25,000 street price when you get into various
precious metals. It kind of makes me glad precious metal clarinets were
never accepted. The bassoon world also wins. And all worlds are but a mere
pittance compared to the string world.

The overriding question is whether or not the instrument is that much
better. The R13 lists for $4,483.00. I seriously doubt the Tosca is twice
as good and therefore worth twice as much. If someone wants to convince me
otherwise by letting me try their Tosca clarinets, it would be my pleasure.
