Sounds like the steps you have taken are the most prudent. If you were
having such difficulties removing that ring, it seems likely that it had
been glued in place. The traditional repair for the cracked socket and tone
hole is to graft on a new socket but it certainly does not sound like your
problems warrant such an extreme measure at this time. If you do need to
take more aggressive steps, I've had a lot of success in using carbon fiber
as an option to the metal band. It which requires only a very narrow
groove, finishes flush with the surface and might be something to consider
if you find the crack starts to open again.
