I do not see why these two statements are contradictory (with the exception
of my use of the word strike, which I will retract and revise with your
suggestion of the word close or perhaps "must come into contact with").

For the reed to close the mouthpiece completely, the reed must come into
contact with the mouthpiece. By definition, no?

The latest revision would then read:

[Insert stuff about characteristic clarinet sounds - echoton schmechoton!].
The reed must come into contact with the mouthpiece.

I do believe we are in agreement. Please correct me if I am wrong.

PS: There are also people who still believe the earth is flat. I try not to
spend too much time with such people, it seems to dull my brain.
