And be prepared. This topic has come up before, and there are those who
refuse to believe that the reed closes the mouthpiece completely, in spite
of photographic evidence.

That would be more accurate. The use of the work "strike" brings with it
an image of a percussive sound resulting. "Close" would probably be most
correct.
